Our New Years Tradition

Our New Years Tradition

2016 already?! Where did 2015 go?!! And more importantly, where are the black eyed peas? Say What?

Every year on New Years Day, per my husband's southern roots, we have a meal of pork, sauerkraut and black eyed peas. It is meant to bring you good fortune and luck in the new year. This is one of his all time favorite meals. Problem is, I always forget and end up running out to to find the one grocery store that is open on New Year's Day and praying they will have what I need.

Our New Years Tradition

As shocking as it seems, there are a ton of families in Minnesota who observe this tradition because everything is usually sold out! So I run from store to store, trying to get these three odd ingredients, all for a year with good fortune.

The first few years the kids wouldn't touch the food, but we always insisted everyone had to have one bite consisting of all three ingredients. Not easy when your two year old locks their mouth shut because let's be honest -sauerkraut smells brutal. As the years have gone by, it has gotten a bit easier to get the kids to take one bite- threats can go along way at our house.

Last year the boys and I had our one bite of everything as usual; then my daughter (who thinks her dad hung the moon) decided it was the best meal ever and sat down with her dad and and they each had a plateful. SO next year I am going to try and get the shopping done for our big New Year's Day Meal early, and who knows, maybe the boys will take two bites in 2017?

We didn't make it to midnight on New Year's Eve (again)-shocker!
