A Few of our Favorite Small Businesses

Our favorite small businesses in honor of small business satruday

We're big advocates of shopping small over here. That should come as no surprise! So in honor of small business Saturday (which is THIS Saturday!) we are sharing some of our favorite small businesses.

Haptic Lab

Haptic Lab is a quilting / texting / kite making company based in Brooklyn. A friend sent me an interview with the founder, Emily Fischer, a few years ago which prompted a pretty huge work/design crush on my part. I love giving their coastal quilts as wedding presents! They make great housewarming gifts and are personal without being cheesy—my favorite thing.

Askov Finlayson

Askov Finlayson is a mens clothing store + clothing designer in our hometown, Minneapolis. It's actually named for a town in Northern Minnesota—I didn't know this until driving up north in September. Their design aesthetic calls on nordic sensibilities, a modern take on northern living. Their Keep the North Cold Collection is part of a campaign to combat climate change, and is my favorite of their lines. Everything in this collection makes me homesick and proud in the best way.  Askov Finlayson Keep the North Cold Hats

Knotty Tie

I found Knotty Tie by complete chance—googling "custom bow ties" while planning my husband and my wedding two years ago. I was so happy to find a small business right in Denver! The guys that started Knotty are incredibly friendly, accommodating and hard working. Their ties are incredibly high quality and exactly what you want—like minds over here. They also have a social mission built into the core of their company, to create dignified employment opportunities for skilled resettled refugees. These guys are really doing it, Harry! Be sure to give them a look.

Herriott Grace

Herriott Grace is a father daughter pair that creates hand turned wooden objects, such as spoons, bowls, serving boards, etc. I know a rolling pin doesn't seem like something to get super worked up over, but give me a break with these things. He is in Victoria and she in Toronto; they collaborate via post by mailing their work back and forth. Such a beautiful example of family business, not to mention their design.

In the blog "Embracing a New Journey: Growing Our Blended Family," we share the heartwarming news of our family's expansion, expecting our fourth child in May 2024. As a blended family, this pregnancy holds unique significance, marking our first as a united family unit. While the prospect of parenting alongside a 17-year-old son and 8 and 6-year-old daughters presents its challenges, the anticipation of a new arrival fills us with excitement.
